Address Plaque

I had some wood left over from the upstairs bathroom under floor, so I decided to make a fancier address plaque.

I use the same logo on all signs in the home and on the guestbook. You can’t tell from this picture but all the black is engraved (using a router) about 1/5 inch deep.

AC deep cleaning

Although I clean all filters on all AC units every time I’m at Ozuye, sometimes cleaning the filters isn’t enough. I could clearly see the AC in the great room being dirty and dusty beyond the filter. So I took off the housing and managed to reach the blower, which was full of gunk.

Above shows what I cleaned out, using a long brush. After cleaning the housing everything was put back together.

Now it looks as clean as when I installed it.

Shower Improvement

The downstairs bathroom rain shower was in need of some TLC. The small rubber strip on the floor was worn and as a result, the entire bathroom floor would get wet every shower.

As I did not want to put a shower pan in, I opted for the next best thing; creating a shower pan with a special strip, much higher than the rubber strip. But as the strip alone would not prevent water splashing over the pan, I also mounted a shower curtain rail and bought a fitting shower curtain.

I also used the steel wire that came with the rail to properly strengthen the shower head, which had been supported by an improvised support made from an older coat hanger.

The pan strip is intentionally a little larger than the rail, so that water dripping down from the curtain stays with the pan.

This should fix the wet floor issue. Just to be sure I will place a warning on the right mirror to be aware of the strip as you step back, as even though there’s enough space to stand, if you step back not knowing there’s a pan strip on the floor, it could trip someone. Think of it as the warning on microwaves not to dry your cat in it.

Entry Light

Coming home one evening I realized it’s pretty dark walking to the stairs. So I installed an automatic lamp, which turns on at dusk, switches off at dawn and lights up brighter when movement is detected.

Upstairs Bathroom Do-Over

Earlier this year, the upstairs shower had a leakage problem. At first I thought it was water going through the cracked hardy backer board that was used as un underfloor. So I used grout sealer to make the grouts more waterproof. But as it turned out, the problem was bigger; besides the cracked underfloor, the shower pan exhaust pipe got loose, so whenever the shower was used, water would leak under the shower pan, through the grouts, underfloor and floor boards onto the kitchen floor below.

So drastic measures were called for, as can be seen here

I removed the tiles, (cracked) hardy backer board and the shower pan.

After that I put a new subfloor in of 19/32″ plywood. I decided to not put the tiles back in, as the floor might work some more and again break the underfloor or tiles.

I managed to get the plywood under the shower wall, so there’s now a solid underfloor that can give a little bit if the beams on which the floor rest work some more.

On top of this floor I will put vinyl click tiles, which are waterproof and more flexible than stone tiles. And warmer to the feet than stone tiles.

Hot tub sensor

Every time I visit Ozuye myself, I notice some things that need to be fixed. The hot tub sensor was on the ground next to the deck, so that obviously did not work. Because of the drop, the battery case was broken inside, so I fixed that and replaced the sensor batteries. Now the indoor display (and the InkBird app on my iPhone) show the correct temperatures again

Finishing up the skirt

Having completed the skirt, staining it brown ( a poll showed a vast majority preferred brown over federal grey) I’m happy with the result.

The brown skirt makes the whole structure more balanced in color. The deck support is now federal grey. Having the gap under the extension closed also looks more neat, as you can’t see the scaffolding stored under there

One thing I notice when I look at the above pictures; that single horizontal cedar board stands out a lot as I did not have the right color stain. I will fix that later todayUpdate: this looks a little better. It’s hard to get the color exactly the same.

Insulation

After skirting the Pier and Beam foundation, I added spray foam insulation to the inside. This fill up any gaps in the skirt and should help keep the house cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

It’s a nasty job, as you have to suit up and wear eye protection and a face mask, as the solvents in the spray cans isn’t very healthy.

When I enter and shut the door, it’s pretty much pitch black in there, so it should keep those paper wasps and mud daubers out too.
